My Story
CQMS Maitiu O Aimhirnghin, 2 Field Engineers, currently serving as the Barrack Accountant for Cathal Brugha Barracks, Kilbride Camp and Government Buildings (MP Det) since 2018. Previously served in 2 & 7 Inf Bn and 2 LSB, Maithiu has deployed with 6 overseas missions in, Lebanon, East Timor & Bosnia and 1 tour in the EU Battle Group. Maitiu, hails from Ballymun/Blanchardstown in Northside Dublin and is married to Sandra, he has a son Ian, who currently serves in 2 Cavalry Squadron. He joined the Defence Forces in 1994. At 52 years of age, he is an active youth leader in his local scout group (1st Meath Dunboyne) and is also part of the National Provincial Training team for Scouting Ireland.
In the last four years, he has attempted the Liffey descent three time’s, completed two, and came in third place last year. In 2024, himself and three friends went on an expedition on the Big Salmon river finishing up in Carmacks on the Yukon River, Canada, paddling for 12 day’s un aided.
On the 19 April 2025, he will take on a massive race challenge in Estonia, called The Vohandu Marathon, this race is classed as the longest single paddle sporting race to be held in the world. The 100Kms has to completed within a single 24hr period. His goal for this event is to complete it within 13 hours and at the same time raise much needed funds for Homeless Irish Veterans.
